Nested in the Sierra Nevada foothills and a stone’s throw away from Lake Kaweah, sits a writer’s retreat blessed with the sound of the Kaweah River year-round and a spectacular grove of sycamore trees. 

A net zero energy garage acts as the literal and spiritual power plant for the site, with its solar panel roof, native plant living wall and yoga studio, supplying electricity to the existing three cottages which were completely renovated. The natural surrounding is celebrated in the design with the use of local slate, salvaged wood and a subtle color palette. Curving ceilings and undulating stacked stone walls reflect the merging of the nearby Kaweah River forks. The new outdoor shower, sauna and pizza oven complete this retreat as a restful oasis from city life. Special care has been given to preserving the landscape and bringing it into the life of the houses.
